BDN is Raw and All Natural
We only use fresh human grade meats for our products, no scraps. Not one piece of meat has the same protein/fat content. It all depends of the condition and age of the animal. Like humans, there might be a huge difference between one cow or another. It is impossible to have exact figures with natural unprocessed products. These exact figures are created by the large pet food companies because they cook everything to a powder and then add the necessary artificial vitamins and minerals. With unprocessed foods, as BDN, you don’t need to do that. Nature has a splendid way to take care of this. Also, if you really wish to work with percentages and calories, you also have to take the bio-availability in consideration. This is never mentioned by the industry. Natural, unprocessed foods have a very high bio-availability. Most of the food gets digested and used by the dog’s system. With processed foods, like kibble, the bio-availability is rather low. A lot of the digested calories end up as waste. With BDN you will notice that the dog’s waste is very little.
Like in nature, if exposed to the cold in the winter, dogs most likely will need more energy, so more food. Like with kids, you just watch your dog’s condition. This doesn’t change over night and if you feel your dog needs a bit more, you increase the amount. Not every dog has the same metabolism. Some dogs need more than others. Some are more active, some are plain lazy. Just keep an eye on your dog and you’re good to go.
You don’t need to add anything. We use high quality ingredients with a lot of fresh meat. We ferment our vegetables which makes the vitamins and minerals highly available and digestible. Fermentation also creates an abundance of beneficial lactobacteria (probiotics).
We advice to weigh the food on a kitchen scale in the beginning . Not every variety has the same consistency. Like with other foods, a cup of popcorn doesn’t weigh the same as a cup of rice. A cup of BDN beef weighs not the same as a cup of BDN chicken. For every 4 oz. of air dried BDN we use 1 pound of fresh meats, fruits and vegetables. Meats in their natural state contain 65 to 70 % of water. Fruits and vegetables, up to 90 %. We take out most of that water. Although water has no real nutritional value, it is necessary to let function the dog’s system in an optimal way. That’s why we advice to add the water to the food. This way the dog get it in it’s system in a natural way. Dog’s are not designed to drink water in large amounts. It adding it to their food is the second best way after feeding raw meats. BDN is designed to dehydrate and absorb the water again in an optimal way.
So to answer your question, 4 oz. has the nutritional value of 1 lb. You don’t need to add that much water. Just top it off with warm to hot tap water and you’re good to go.
